Floppy Plants

by Margi
(Just NW of Chicago)

"Plant them close together so they support each other" doesn't work for me for the most part. I seem to get various fungal problems which I guess are from poor air circulation. Or the plants fall in among each other, like when you intertwine your fingers. This is my 3rd year using fish emulsion and the garden is much stronger and less fungal problems. In fact, the coneflowers didn't flop this year! And the phlox are practically disease free! But I still have to put wire "baskets" around many plants for support. Any thoughts?

Weak stems on day lilies

by LH
(NJ)

Many of my day lilies have developed very weak stems, causing the plants to pitch forward when flowering. I have had to tie them with garden twine to support sticks.
Why is this happening?

Mum plants

Should I be cutting my mum plants right down for winter or leave them and deal with them in the fall?
Thanks!

Echinacea

by Sheree
(Kingston, ON)

Please advise why my Echinacea has finished flowering for the season. They have been dead looking for a few weeks now, so I have dead-headed them; will they flower again this year? And in the centre of the flower where the seeds are there are these little tiny worms taking up residence. Is this normal; how do i prevent this from reoccurring? Thank you.

Cone Flowers that take over the garden

by marilyn
(SF Bay rea, Calif)

All your comments re ease, beauty, self seeding and use as bird feeders ring true. But helP--they take over everything. Should I be digging up the plants each Fall and wait for seedlings and then pluck to thin or is there a good way to keep the coneflowers from being so thick that they tumble over and crowd out everything else

What is the secret to growing Poppys from seed? I can't even get them to germinate in the house let alone direct sowing outside. I live in Zone 5 -6 south central PA. Thanks!
