A Virgin Garden

My husband and I moved into a house nearly 18 months ago and it was like walking into a 1970's time warp!

But the garden was without any shape or form. It hadn't been touched in YEARS! Where to start.?

I got somebody in to make a shrub bed for me and to build a raised bed for plants. In real terms it probably is only the size of a small back yard but is sufficient for me to look after.

Having completed these tasks , where to go from there?

My next-door neighbour asked a few weeks ago "What are you going to plant?" I hadn't a clue so he went on to suggest, "as long as it is edible."

So far I have planted salad stuff and potatoes, carrots and have two seed trays coming on rapidly of tomatoes and fennel.

Why am I so excited about all of this? I have NEVER grown anything from seed before and I am in my 60's!

After we have enjoyed the fruits of my labours what am I going to grow next? Well, having read a lot of your articles I can see that there is a lot of strategy I need to improve the heavy clay soil. So far all I have done is put everything into rooting compost and the carrots with added sand.

I shall be looking at your advice with close interest. Sorry, can't do pictures as I don't yet have the know-how!
