When planting a Shrub or Tree, try standing a hollow pipe(1-2 inches in diameter)along side of the plant roots before filling in with earth. Water your plant through this pipe. You don't have to worry about the water running off once the earth dries out, because you are watering next to the roots. Make sure you remove the pipe before the cold days of fall start.
