Monarch caterpillar

Monarch caterpillar

This is a photo of a monarch caterpillar on milkweed. It was poised and ready to have its picture taken. I have tried to let milkweed plants grow in the garden, but have limited this milkweed to a selected area.
I have planted the more floriforous Asclepias tuberosa and A. incarnata in my perennial beds to encourage monarch larvae.

Antenna

I believe these appendages are called antenna. If the antenna was magnified we would see the detail on them . There would be thousands of fine sensory hairs covering its entire length. They use these hairs for smell.
