beginning gardeners big mistake

by Elizabeth Blake
(Lake Orion, MI, )

In 1972, my husband and I decided to start vegetable gardening for the first time. We decided to plant enough of everything so there would be some for canning later; so we purchased and planted the following:

3 flats (48 plants in a flat) each of
tomatoes,
green peppers,
broccoli,
corn.

Then, we planted like amount of different kinds of
beans,
cauliflower,
muskmellon,
squash,
zuchini, and
carrots.

Now, this was just for a family of five!!!!

Needless to say, we ate, canned, and gave fresh veggies to anyone who would take them---zuchini was the hardest to give away.

Ah, the beginning gardeners learned that More does not always mean Better. Seasoned gardeners should like this true story.

My husband and I started our first garden in 2008. We wanted a few cucumbers....(it's just the two of us)....hmm how many plants should we get? Well, we ended up getting 10 plants and happily puttered in the garden planting them along with a few other veggies, then waited and watched. Errr, when do they stop producing??? I learned to make dill pickles....and more dill pickles....and more..THAT'S IT! no more cucumbers!!!
Well, this year I discoved how to make bread and butter pickles, hmmm, how many plants do I want to get for next season? :D
