Birdhouses

Isn't it amazing how many styles and forms of birdhouses there are out there in our gardening world.  It is equally fascinating to watch the reaction of we mere humans to our flying cousins.

I live on an island that's a major flyway for migrating birds so we see our share of interesting creatures - from the big raptors wintering here to the small songbirds flying up in search of the swarms of spring insects to hit our shores.  But nothing compares to the sight of hundreds of cars driving around the island in the spring as the birders arrive to stake out positions on the shore or in owl  woods to watch for birds.

Here are a few birdhouse pictures I've collected over the years.  I hope they give you some idea for building your own.

I note that these don't come with instructions fo construction nor the identification of the birds they might (or might not) attract.  Some might even be (gasp!) for decorative purposes.

A Twig Bird House

Don't ask me how practical or for what bird this one is built for - I just think it's as decorative as it is functional.
