cat and the groundhog

I am a senior citizen who raises her garden in containers and two small raised gardens. My cat Mittens, who passed away one month ago, loved to sit on the rail of the raised garden with me while I worked..She always kept her face towards the shed.

There was a bout a 30 pound Ground hog who came each summer and hung around the shed..He would come for supper in my garden eating my tomatoes and green peppers. I always threw down a few for him because he always trampled my vines climbing into them....

Mittens would keep her ears up watching for him to come out. Now this a 5 pound cat up against a 30 pound ground hog...

I would tell her she was not to go near him...But one time while I was sitting there, he came unanounced wanting some
green beans. Her ears went up and she flew
towards him like she was going to tear him up..

Instead of fighting her, he just laid down...and looked at her...She stopped her paws....looked at him...looked at me...as to say feed him...

I got up, grabbed her, pulled some green beans off of the vines and threw them down to him....He sit there eating his supper with out a care in the world..and Mittens was calm and enjoyed watching him dine.

She always looked forward to going to the garden with me and watching for the ground hog.

Sometimes he came out, but always looked her way as to ask is it ok? This past summer the
ground hog did not come. Mittens looked for him each and every time we visited the garden.

This March 14th I lost my beloved Mittens to a thyroid conditon that kept her from gaining weight...

The garden will not be the same with either my Mittens or the ground hog gone, but never forgotten!

Thank you for this garden site...love it

Mittens and Sugar

Thank you for your sympathy, Marilyn! Maybe when we go to Heaven, we will get to spend time with them again; I sure hope so! And hopefully we will meet each other there too! I am 68 now and retired (disabled because of a muscle disease) for 13 years now.
I enjoy planting and caring for flowers, but always pay for any work I do out there. :-(
Take care and God bless you.

Sarah, I am sorry you lost your Sugar. I know how you feel..They are our family and we miss them so..I go to the garden every day, and I would sit where I buried her and cry my eyes out. .I know how you felt when you had to put
Sugar down...That is so hard, but we know we
must to keep them from suffering...
A new ground hog came this summer...and I laughed, and I cried because I thought to myself, Mittens would have enjoyed watching him play in the yard and reach for a tomato...Her eyes
would get big as he would climb into the
garden...I understand how you feel...We love
our pets...They are family~~~~~~~
Thank you Sarah....Marilyn

Thank you for the nice story about Mittens. I'm sorry she's gone now....hopefully to kitty heaven. How old was she? I know sometimes you aquire a kitty not knowing when it was born.
I lost my beloved Sugar 3 years ago and I still miss her so much. She had cancer in her mouth, poor thing. She was brave and we grew even closer in her last months. She was about 17 years old. She came to me, a stray about half grown, a beautiful long-haired Calico with large orange and black patches on her beautiful white body! She was a great kitty!

The ground hog stopped coming the
the year before Mittens passed...but I will look for him this summer that is for sure..He was an older groundhog, big and scrubby...but he seemed safe.
Thank you for your comment...I am an animal lover...and hope to get another kitty to take to my garden...

A good story

Isn't it something how animals commucate with each other. If you take it slow and watch you will see this. I am sorry about your Mittens but it sounds like your time together was good. I hope you still feed the groundhog.
