EDGING - Raspberries

I have a hedge of raspberries that continually invades the surrounding areas. How deep (tall) does an edging have to be to prevent the raspberries from sending out shoots that pop up in adjacent areas? What is the best material to use?

Doug says you're going to have to go down 8-12 inches to stop this aggressive plant. A shallow edging designed to stop grass isn't going to work for very long with raspberries.

As for the best material - it's a toss up depending on what you like the look of. If it were mine however, I'd be digging a trench and laying in landscape fabric (heavy duty - pro level stuff) and making a "wall" of it then installing a good-looking edging towards the surface.

The trick in holding back any plant with landscpaing edging is to create a seamless or well-overlapped barrier so the weed species can't penetrate without a lot of effort.

Having said that - sooner or later - raspberries like a bunch of other very aggressive and tough plants will figure out a way through darn near any landscaping system you devise.

At best we can hold them back. :-)

Good luck
