Yellow bird takes a ride on the coneflowers

by Carol
(Cheektowaga, New York, USA)

I took this picture of a cute little yellow bird on one of my coneflowers. Although he was probably nibling on the center of the flower, I have noticed these adorable little birds like to sit on the long stemed flowers on a windy day and take a little ride in the wind. It's as though my backyard is an amusement park for little birds.

a flower in the making...

While looking at my sunflowers I noticed this one that's not quite open yet. I really like the interesting pattern inside the unopened flower. Usually I don't think buds as being anything special, but these are so neat I thought I'd share them with everyone!

Is this your garden?

Here in Nanoose Bay, Vancouver Island these are the biggest drawback to growing a complete garden. We have daily visits from our "deer" friends, so our gardening is limited to what they don't eat.

These are pictures of the coccoons in my butterfly cage. A friend showed me how to make it and this is my first time using the cage. I am excited to actually watch the process from Butterfly to egg to caterpillar to coccoon and back again. Will be putting out milkweed this next year to attract the Monarch butterfly.

Who can resist this colorful bunch?

I have never planted these little colorful flowers, they just seem to come up all around my yard, even in the grass! These came up by a empty knot of wood I have near my back door.

Beautiful Fungus?

Beautiful Fungus?

Beautiful Fungus?

This strange fungus appeared once only in a rotting stump that we have in a small woodlot garden. The stump was an old white birch, if that means anything. We found it fascinating & never could find out what it was or what would cause it, although we researched as best we could. The one thing we did not do was ask Doug!

From clay to "Hey!"

Asymmetrical raised bed

Asymmetrical raised bed

Having clay soil prompted me to build this raised garden, using cement bricks I got for free and 7 yards of top soil hauled in. A friend helped with the waterfall/pond, and 7 years later we have a beautiful garden to enjoy!

Hydrangea Coming into Bloom

by Lisa
(Carp, Ontario, Canada)

This is the 3rd year for this Hydrangea and it is finally blooming. I planted this out 3 yrs ago and it was blue. It died off the first year and the second year it didn't do much of anything but I left it and this year it has amazed me. The flowers are purple, pink and some very light blue. It has tripled in size from last year.

Everyone that tells me their Hydrangea is dead I keep telling them give it another year or too and it will amaze you as mine did to me. :)
