May Beauty
This is early color that jumps up every May behind our house. From the front are bugleweed, hosta, sweet woodruff, pink forget-me-nots, and tulips.
This is Spring!
by Carla
(Grand Rapids, Mi. U.S.A.)
The iris were in the garden when we moved in and I added poppies to really make them "pop". I get so excited when they all start to open because it means spring is really here.

Patio Garden
We enjoy the warm Missouri Summers looking out on our patio garden. We installed the garden bed and fountain this year; the birds love it as much as we do!

Backyard Summertime Staycation
by Lisabeth Rosenberg
(Chicago, Illinois)
I have a outdoor living room on my back deck where I may savor the rewards of working in my garden. It's hard to believe that I'm just 5 minutes from downtown Chicago and I can enjoy the nature and a giant piece of sky. I'm 3 blocks from the highway but I don't hear the noise due to all the beautiful trees in the Old Irving Park neighborhood.
Side Yard Late August 2009
by Jane Wheeler
(Englewood, Ohio USA)
I have the "cottage garden" look going on in my yard. (I think cottage garden is a nice way of saying "lazy gardener's yard"!) The clematis growing along the fence is Virginiana and that's only one plant! Get's cut down to the ground each spring and by late August it takes over the fence! You can see the red hardy hibiscus poking thru the clematis, and more of them on the otherside of the gate.
Smell the roses
by Claire Gaboury
(Quebec, Canada)
The Pink Pavement rose hedge was planted first to keep the children away from the water but it turned out to be the best place to sit and smell the roses, sheltered from the wind
colorful serenity

(Murfreesboro, TN)
cottage garden
My husband and I dug up the 20' x 10' space behind the house, laid a path, built a swing and pergola, and planted some my favorite plants - Knockout Roses, Anabelle Hydrangia, Hibiscus, Cone flowers, Russian Sage, and various ornamental Grasses. It has turned into my favorite place to spend a cool morning or evening, listening to the birds and watching the light play off the colors.

Spring Spiderwort
by Carla
(Grand Rapids, Mi. U.S.A.)
The only "spider" I tolerate!
The Spiderwort grows like weeds all along our little wall between our house and the neighbors. Its my easiest flower, I never worry about it, it always comes up really good. I do have to pull some of it or it will take over the whole garden but its still one of my favorites.

New yard sport: Mower-cross
by Carolyn Haley
(Vermont, USA)
The yard was originally an emerald-green half-acre with a tractor-tire garden in the middle, like a bull's-eye. Then came the rains, which made mowing impossible until the grass was over a foot high. Then came the bee plague, so when I found clumps of clover throughout the grass, I mowed around them to not deprive surviving bees of a favorite food -- which in turn invited the black-eyed Susans to spring up in the uncut sections. Can't bear to cut them down, so creative mowing has become the new norm.

Chicago Backyard Dessert Garden
by Lisabeth Rosenberg
(Chicago, Illinois)
This shows the same backyard but at garden level (left of my other backyard picture). It gets really hot during the summer. The Russian Sage, Lavender do real good with the intense heat. I try to stick with inexpensive worry free flowers and garden sculptures consisting of re-purposed items and junkyard finds. I really wanted to do a rock garden (I don't like to look at dirt) I always build upon what I've already have formulated. but I ran out of steam and money so I went with mulch this year. Smooth river rocks in black will be for next year. With three city lots, my yard is a work in progress. I'm living here for five years now.
Rainbow Colored Path
by Laura Pfeifer
(Murfreesboro TN)
The landscaping we completed in the spring filled in very well this summer and we have enjoyed the months of color in our backyard. The path was laid with 100+ year old brick that was salvaged off an old building downtown when it was demolished - it adds so much character to the garden.

Nathan Exploring
by Jocelyn Weatherbe
(Toronto)
My grandson Nathan discovered the tiny overgrown brick path in my Toronto garden and dove right into the middle. He is surrounded by columbine, Goldflame spirea, centaurea montana, aliums, and Joe Pye Weed just starting it's reach for the sky. This picture was taken the end of May and the Joe Pye is almost 9 feet tall at the end of August.
Lake Garden in July
by Rondi Fry
(Traverse City, MI)
Our back yard is on Long Lake near Traverse City in northern Michigan. This photo shows part of the garden in its third summer. This is my first experience with lilies and I'm very pleased with the impact of the colors. In this cool, wet summer they lasted over a month.
Quiet Area

Quiet sitting area
This area was a wild and weedy area when we moved here six years ago. We managed to turn into a quiet sitting area.
