Gardening Words

by Doug
(In his Garden)

I’m working on a “word” project this year that has me intrigued no end. (Given I’m a writer, this isn’t all that surprising he says with a trace of delight) I thought I’d also create a series of words for 2011 in gardening as well.

What’s with the words? I think words have great power and when we focus on the words, we can change our behavior and our minds. “What we think, what we say, we are” philosophy. And when we change ourselves, we also change those who interact with us. Our family, friends and neighbors respond to our behavior and if that behavior is a positive one, then we can expect positive changes in others.

Here are 11 words I’ve come up with to write about, to think about in relation to my gardening this season. Not only to write about but to practice in my gardening.

I can’t decide whether to stick with 11 for 2011 or go for 12 because there are 12 months in the year.

If I go with 12, I’m going to have to add one.

I’m open to suggestions. :-)

What’s your word (that’s different in intent than these)? If I like it, I’ll “steal” it and write about that word as well. Add it to the comments section below.

Here are my top 11 words

Organic
Sustainable
Renewable
Renewing
Spirit
Contemplative
Uplifting
Sharing
Bold
Challenge
Do and why I think this is a critically important word.

change
by: Judith

Last May I moved from Texas to North Dakota. While I was waiting for my furniture I planted a garden. It was so neat to see the plants come up. Now it is Feb.and snow has been on the ground since Nov. I can hardly wait to see my spring bulbs peeking up thru the gound. Northern gardening has been a neat experience.

Brings to mind the lengths to which gardeners will go to challenge Mother Nature.

In living colour
by: Sheila

My own word would be "vibrant." I have a brilliantly sustaining image in my mind this winter of the grand swaths of (vibrantly) coloured tulips I planted last fall waving gently in the breeze.

Funny enough, though, the word I thought of for you to consider, Doug, was "cornucopia."

Problem with blog

Weird, I keep getting messages of new posts to this blog, but nothing after Breath: by BJ shows up. There's no link to click to go to the next page or however it's suppose to work. Am I the only one having this issue?

My word would be "hope". I am planning my garden this year with the hope that I will still be in my home to plant and enjoy it. Of course, I always hope that my plants will grow and look half as good as I thought they would.

Woe me miserum
by: Janice

WOE is my word for all the times I tried and failed but came bouncing back to try again. The greatest teacher in life is the soil and one of my favourite sayings from a recently read business book is ... "if you work hard the soil will not be lazy."

From WOE comes WISDOM. Oh WOW.

Words from the garden
by: Elaine S.

Along with all the other great words, I also like "therapeutic" & "comforting". There is nothing that can beat getting your hands into that wonderful earth when you're feeling down or out of shape! Another word I find my garden gives me is "inspirational". Many a good idea or decision has been made while gardening.

More Gardening Words . . .
by: Ellie G.

I'm a word addict, too, and here are the ones that immediately came to my mind when I read your list -- creativity, resilience, idealism, and nurturing. I find all of these a part of my gardening experience. Even if you don't incorporate any of these, I still look forward to all your thoughts this coming year.

Breath
by: BJ

I want this year to be about breathing in air and finding that space of focus and connection. Today it was raining and I walked out and could feel the clean air and took a breath. Love my space near the creek.
