How To Compost Ebook and More Questions

by Doug

The compost seminar is now officially over and questions should be asked through the newsletter or question forms on the websites. They will not (sadly) be answered here.

Here's where you can ask questions about compost making. :-)

I've sent you out the ebook on the basics - the really basic things you need to know. What to include in the pile, what not to include and the ratio of each of the green:brown materials to put into the pile.

So what other questions about compost making do you have?

compost tea questions-not in ebook
by: marilyn

Is there a substitiute for worm castings? Is the 1 lb of castings in recipe for dry castings or wet, if I remember right you used 3 cups on your video? In one of your earlier postings, you gave a recipe for tea w/out the worm castings. If that was not a typo, how viableof a sustitute is that?

what is colloidal compost? I heard of it in a link from one of your articles and short of buying their ebook--I'd rather wait for yours!--thought you may be able to enlighten!

Just add water?
by: Heather

Many thanks for the book. My compost seems to get quite dry. Is it the right thing to do to just add water in the top?

making compost

I have just read a useful tip ..wrap your kitchen scraps (green) in a few sheets of newspaper(brown) and bury in your compost pile. I think it was called a compost taco. It is a tidy piece of work.

ebook download issues
by: Doug

Hi folks - the ebook download was in an email to seminar list participants. If you didn't get that email, then you need to join the list. If you're on the list - please check your spam folder.

As for the links not working - I checked them out on 2 separate systems and they all work for me.

I have no idea what isp you use (aol does terrible things to links) but I can't help you with this problem. Sorry

Compost too old?
by: Claire

A couple of other questions Doug: 1) Is it possible for compost to age too long? For example, if a pile is exposed the elements for too long, will the nutrients get washed out? 2) Is brown material stuff that was formerly green but no longer has nitrogen in it because of age, chemical processing, etc?

Daily kitchen scraps
by: Claire

Hi Doug, First of all, in the summertime I never seem to have enough brown material. It didn't occur to me to add shredded paper so that info was very enlightening. THanks! My question is, if I have a large pile of compost that's maturing, is it OK to add daily kitchen scraps to it or should those go in a separate new pile? Sometimes I have so many piles going that I don't have room for a new pile!
