How to Make Compost Tea

by Doug
(Somewhere out in Lake Ontario)

Here's a video on how to make compost tea. I hope it helps. As always, please feel free to make comments below.

NOTE - I do make a reference to recipes etc and these will be uploaded to the main website and a link put in here but for the moment, they're not here. There's only so much time in a day. :)

I like to see videos of things I haven't done, but I would like more detail. Just two more minutes of video would have been enough, I think. Do you strain the vermicompost out, or does it 'melt' into the water, so to speak? I've heard of using regular compost and straining it out after it soaks, or putting it into a stocking and steeping it like a tea bag; maybe you could show us how to do that, too, in case we don't have access to vermicompost? Thanks for the videos!

Seeing you do it is so much better than reading how to do it. It takes the "oh I'm not sure" right out of it! Thanks so much.

Video OK. Bit of static but voice very clear.

Just keep it going.Don't worry about the negative comments.

some answers

Thanks for your extra answers Doug. As usual, over and above the call.... Please don't look upon our comments as complaints--they are suggestions as to how you can make things even better and our comments do take some effort to compile. You're great and we care. Quick and dirty is just fine!!!

From the KIS website Noise is about that of a hair dryer; less if you go for the super model. Conclusion: shouldn't be a problem for anyone!

Very Interesting

Wow! Great demonstration. It's easier than I had imagined.

Just what we've been waiting for. Thanks. Now we can get to work and not too late for this season. Most of my observations have been covered so I'll just add some detail!!! :-)
-sound interference. Seems to be a technical glitch on your side, Doug. The end of the video didn't have it!
-specialized equipment. I want to rig one up out of a garden hose and other bits and pieces. It helped to see the KISS equipment. Have you ever made your own and is this why you went to the expense of buying one???
- specialized compost. Is worm castings compost really necessary? Can I use my regular aged compost?
-noise. My urban neighbours have enough raised eyebrows about my compost and we go out of our way to do our noisy shredding and mulching when they are away. How does the noise compare to say the pump in the pond?
- hard to see your finger on a black container against your black shirt! Picky, picky!

Again, thanks. The close up really emphasized the importance of a powerful pump--and big bubbles!

Thanks for the video, though I too had much static which made hearing some sections difficult. Could you let us know where we could purchase the red worms for making compost?

No compost tea video

Hi Doug, Am I the only one who didn't get the video or link for the compost tea video? Just the heading How to make the tea, your note and then a biggish blank before the comments started. Gremlins somewhere?

I was a little disappointed in your video. Do I really need to buy a new pump? I have an aquarium pump for a 40 gal tank. This pump moves a lot of water but not like the pump in the video. Your pump is on steriods.
Also, I only have compost,no worm casting. Even my compost is not completely broken down yet. Can I use "incomplete" compost?
Thanks for the video.

Thanks Doug. Looks easy. Might give it whirl depending upon how loud the pump is. Someone else asked about that. Speaking of noise, there was a fair amount of static during that video. Did anyone else notice it or do I have a computer problem? Haven't heard static in any other videos I've watched lately.

Thanks for the great video! I too would like more info on the tubing and air pump. Your air pump seems pretty loud. Is this loud enough to upset neighbors at night?

looing forward to more

goodway to extend my worm casing supply also w/ info that you too have trouble w/ barrel composter once I know what kind of tubing and pump to get, I'm giving that away and using your compost tea recipe. thanks

using tea
by: Ann

It looks easy enough to make. What is the equipment cost and how do you use it? Is it diluted in a sprayer or used full strength? Do you just wet leaves or saturate the ground? How often is it applied?

GREAT info

Thank you. We have been vermicomposting for years and never tried making tea!

Excellent video except no real details on hose and pump (or I'm too dense to understand it) and no plan of using the tea.
