It's A Dog's Life (in the garden)

rainy Aug morning

rainy Aug morning

We had 2 golden retrievers and then 2 years ago we got another retriever puppy, Sydney is her name. She thought the world belonged to her, including the garden. The older dogs knew they were not allowed in the garden but would always be waiting just outside to get a vegetable from myself.

Once Sydney tasted the potatoes or carrots she loved them and decided to help herself. The older dogs would wait outside again and when she stole a vegetable they would take it away from her and she would go back for more.

She got so good at getting carrots she just pulled them out instead of digging them.

Everybody thought this was great except me of course.

So I have built a fence around the top of the garden to keep her out, the bottom doesn't need it as we live on a slope and the garden bed is 2' higher than the lawn.

She has since been trained to stay out.

The fence has a dual purpose as the garden is a southern exposure all day and so I'm hoping it will hold the heat in longer into the night.

It's a dog's life

Hi,
this is a very amusing story and I think that it had something to do with the fact that these carrots are homegrown as opposed to store bought. My dog,a Golden Retriever mix, doesn't like veggies at all, neither raw nor cooked.I have to grind them up and mix into ground beef for him to eat them.He is fed a natural diet with raw meaty bones, whole eggs, fish and ground beef.

Labs do the same
by: Doug

We had a black lab that was a great carrot harvester - and when she tried to teach the Old English sheepdog to do the same, the poor old thing couldn't quite figure it out. All she got were the tops.

So the OE continued to eat tomatoes instead. And look very guilty every time we caught her. But we never did figure out a way to stop either one of them. :-)

CARROT PRINCESS

A carrot loving dog!...made me laugh to picture that young pup pulling carrots out of the ground...Amazing how smart animals of all sorts become when there stomachs are involved, isn't it?...Clever old dogs to watch and wait! A lovely and green spot for so far north.
