This is a picture of our rear deck being smothered with our 18 year old Japanese Wisteria. It is well worth all the pruning required to maintain one of these beautiful plants.

Growing blooms on Wisteria
by: Gail Clowers

I have been asked for advice, so here goes... Choose a variety that will offer the size and blooms that you desire. This Japanese Wisteria provides these huge bloom stems and great color, but does get big, so choose the right place. This deck area is 32 feet long and it covers it completely. A Wisteria requires training from the day you plant it. Plan where you want it to go and how best to display the blooms. Pick the laterals that you desire and eliminate the rest. Get a good book on how best to prune for bloom on the particular variety you are trying to grow. Avoid nitrogen fertilizers, opting for P and K. Prune religiously every fall. Once mature, the plant becomes more docile and requires less pruning.
ENJOY!

Wow - that is absolutely stunning! I have a 7 year old Wisteria which has bloomed for the first time this year - has about 6 or so blooms. I have my fingers crossed that it will produce more in the years to come. What to you do to keep yours blooming so well? Advice, please!

Gorgeous blooms on the wisteria! Beautiful garden. I have three wisteria that are still very young, no blooms yet, can't wait 'till they bloom.
