Making a Free Compost Bin

by Doug
(in his garden somewhere)

When it comes to making a free compost bin, the easiest solution is to take 4 skids, a length of wire and make your own bin. I have several of these lined up side by side for a total cost of driving behind a big box store and helping myself to the "Free" pile of skids.

I love it when a great gardening tool doesn't cost you any money. And because I have several, I don't bother mixing or digging or turning (Hey, I'm a lazy gardener) but just make one bin at a time and each bin normally lasts us a year. By the time we've filled the second, the first is ready to empty and use. Lots of compost in this size bin. :-)

My Idea for easy compost
by: Victoria

What do you think about getting a large thick rubbermaid trash can with the lid, cutting the bottom out.Find the right spot in you yard.Dig a trench so that the open end fits into it and goes down into the ground approx 4 or 5 inches nice and snug. Then fill the can with grass clippings, shredded leaves,Coffee grounds "used".Egg shells,Fruit and veggies cut up,basically anything except MEAT OR BONE.You should also poke some nice big holes for air and drainage. No bad smells in fact my compost smells like Dunkin Doughnuts Coffee house.Mix well,Water well,Close to a hose!!I Have the most BEAUTIFUL compost imaginable. My plants love this stuff.I occationally will throw some Miracle Grow soil with slow release fertilizer,Not necessary,Mostly a little left over in the bag.Remember to stir it good with a shovel. And place your lid back on. top,and it's ready.

the compost bins with Pallets
by: Aileen

I am now in possession of 13 pallets courtesy of my local lumber yard. Have watched your video.

Now, question 1: how did you secure the "gate" portion, the side you would remove to toss about the stuff; or how would you recommend one go about that if I want to turn my compost?

Question 2: some of those pallet "spacings" are quite large. Did you add some lumber to close them in a bit more or leave them with that spacing? Wouldn't the compost all kinda fall out through those wide spacings?

I live in the country and If I add food scraps, I will need to bury very deep in the pile, else I will be nothing but a restaurant for the local critters. Any suggestions when you use an open bin with pallets?

Making a free compost bin!

Wow, what a fantastic idea. Thank you so much Doug. I love gardening and it pains me to throw away things I know would make great food for composting.

Having more than one is also a wonderful idea. I have a disability so this will suit me very well. No turning sounds great. Thank you again so much Doug. You've just given me a great gift :)!

Sincerely
Marie Keough
