Ornamental Grass


Ornamental grass is one of those landscaping things that you either really love or you really hate.  There are very few of us in the middle ground on this plant.   My experiences with this started off with a plant a supplier recommended that turned into an Attila the Hun of the plant world in my nursery trial beds.   I spent the next spring eradicating it from both the nursery and my memory.

Over the following years, I've come to respect grasses for the unique role they bring to our gardens.  Their shapes and forms are unique and this upright quality can be used in breaking up visual spaces in uniquely .... well, grass like ways.  

So here are a few grasses you might consider for your garden.

List of Ornamental Grasses


Purple Moor Grass - (Molinia caerulea) is a great short clump grass for a damp, acidic soil or container (bog).

Hakonechloa is a wonderful grass, here's a video of my take on it
