Pets and Tomatoes

About 7 years ago we moved to a new house in town. My neighbor on the north side of my house loved to grow tomatoes in pots and did so each summer. They didn't do too well but they did well enough to produce some tomatoes.

She also was afraid of dogs - except that is, my dog Max a gentle, English Black Lab. He would go over to her house on occasion as dogs do wander sometimes.

Come summer she bought her potted tomato plant and set it in her back yard not too far from her back door, where it could get the sun. We watched it as the tomatoes began to grow and turn red almost ready to pick until one day my lab came home carrying a nice red juicy tomato which he had picked from my neighbor's potted tomato plant.

Now, I scolded him but it didn't seem to matter in the long run because he picked almost all the tomatoes off that plant that summer. That was the end of her potted tomato plants.

Now that she doesn't grow tomatoes anymore he has decided my tomato plants are fair game. This summer I caught him a number of times sitting in the grass playing with a tomato plant he had gone into my garden and picked.

Sometimes he eats them and sometimes he just plays with them and leaves them to be found by whatever creature is willing to finish them off.

Eat your Veggies!
by: Helen Cheryl.

My son taught our Golden Retrievers about Tomatoes, Snap Peas and Strawberries as soon as he was old enough to walk with them in the gardens! At that time we lived in the mountains with a very short growing season! Competition was on for who would get to enjoy the crops! Since then we have had 3 Goldens and they all have loved tomatoes! I have had to plant extra hoping they couldn't get all of them!
We also had a little Apple tree and the dogs would stand up and pull off the fruit to eat! I might have been annoyed had they just pulled the fruit off and left it around the yard to waste. We just came to think of everthing as self service snacks for ranch dogs!

I have 3 girls all of them love my garden. The big girl goes over to the pea trellis and has a very discerning pallette, she only takes the sweet ripe peas right off the vine. The other two like to eat my cherry tomatoes, each having their favorite plant variety. They haven't discovered the big tomatoes yet........

Tomato lovin' dogs

My black lab loves cherry tomatoes! She sits beside me when I am tending the garden in the hopes that I will toss her a few. I usually do as she gets all the split ones. She hasn't picked them herself as I have raised beds and she can't easily get them. Love those labs!
