Love the video and the tip on the petunias:)

As Usual Great Info
by: Maggie

Thanks Doug for some excellent info on pruning petunias. My husband seems to buy mostly this type of plant for our containers and after awhile they look just plain ugly. Therefore I will have to get out there and prune off those tips. Thanks again for the video.

Great tips and any tips on Hibicus
by: Susan A

What a lot of great tips and advice.
Now I to know why my hanging plants can look good one week and what happen to you the next week. I am going to be busy for the next few days.
Thanks again
PS Any tips on growing an hibicus. I have one that is turning out to be a tree. I had it inside for the winter, (not sure if it was located in a good window) as it lost all it's leaves, but when I took it outside this spring it came back full force and looking and blooming great. What do I do in the fall?

Nice and brief :)
by: Lorelei

Thank you for the great video. Now those petunias better ready themselves for some serious pinching today :)
What I would like to see as an add-on to the theme, is how to prune pansies - those are a bit confusing to me.
Keep up the good work!

Useful,practical...Thanks!
by: Dianne

A little late viewing but now my fingers are geared for pinching. I suspect it is a bit later than it should have been but next year I have my "Green" info so I'll have jungle quality basil and flowers! Thanks for another job well done.

Perfect!

Short and to the point, again! Plus great artwork--what more could we ask for!

Great Presentation
by: Larry F

Thanks Doug, you are getting better and better every time you do one of these videos. The picture was clear, the content concise, and the information compelling for those of us who feel we can succeed as container gardeners with a little help from you.

On the money
by: Jacqueline

Doug, thanks once again for giving us the dirt on how to maintain our containers. I was one of the people who waited until it looked sloppy but no longer. Thanks so much for taking the time and sharing your expertise.

Great video
by: Tina

You batted it out of the park, Doug! Very informative, concise, and easy to follow. thanks!!

GREAT
by: Pearls

Thanks Doug i agree with all the other comments. Really a great and informative session.

Great job!
by: Gramma Dirt

Loved the video, although I have been doing this for years, it really is great to hear that what I have been doing it the right thing. It always kills me to pinch everything back when I purchase it, but in the end it's always for the best. Keep these coming, they are what we all need. Either to affirm what we are doing or learn how to do it properly.

Great presentation!
by: Carmen

Doug, thank you for all these videos. I have learned so much. One question, is this pruning techniques applying to all annuals, or only the one growing in a container?

by: Pam in MT

I didn't think your video format could get better but it did! Single topic in depth but again chaste and to the point. Thanks again for what you do.

by: Susan

Once again, Doug, you have presented a great, short, concise video and as always I have learned several things.
Thanks and keep 'em coming.

Great Video!
by: Heather L. Black

You really do have a good video presence. I feel very proud of myself for having pruned my petunia's correctly all of these years! haha Once I let them get too long, I pruned only half of them out, and a couple of weeks later, pruned the rest, and it wasn't so ugle while I waited for them to fill out properly. Keep up the great work!

by: Bonnie

I agree with everyone else. I love these short and informative clips. I like everyone else waited til my petunias were leggy, just deadheading in the meantime.
Thanks

Great Work
by: Joyce

Very informative, easy to understand. You have a great voice for video. Very commanding!

Good video
by: Sandy

Yup... I, like many others, have been waiting too long to prune. Never would have thought of pruning when it looks great! Thanks for the info!

Short and to the point. Perfect video!

by: Sharron

Hi Doug excellent as always did not know about the growing tip on petunias does same go for pansies?

in Winnipeg
by: Maxine

Thanks for the great advice. I'm right out there sprucing up by plants. The same works for marigolds planted in the garden I guess?

Growing Tips
by: Marie

When I went out in search of the growing tips, I could not find any on some of the petunia stems. The same with the impatiens. On other stems I could see two tiny leaves.

I surmised that I may have to wait a day or two for the tip leaves to grow enough to become visable. Then they can be pinched off without pinching the flower buds.

Is that correct?

Green is Beautiful
by: aluf (Jooseph Goldstein)

EXCELLENT, don't have any real criticism since it was so good except "green and ugly" that to me is a misnomer. Green and never ugly.

Great Video
by: Nancy (Mississauga)

Excellent video about pruning containers. I'm always waiting for your next email. when I'm not in the garden. Can't wait for the next video.

Cut to the chase
by: Shirley

Thanks Doug-great job.

Are there any exceptions here? I usually don't prune my tuberous begonia baskets without much problem. Am I just lucky with my shady location they don't grow much anyway? What about wave petunias? They are new to me in planters but I never prune them in the ground and they don't get leggy. You did mention trailing plants that shouldn't be pruned; I assume that means until they get in the way of something else.

Great hold on the white board!

Simple, Clear and Concise
by: Nancy

Loved this. You said it all in a short time and give it clearly and concisely. Yup, out tomorrow to fix those containers right up. Thanks.

Just adding my appreciation to the others that have responded. This was new info for me and I'm looking forward to proving the procedures. Thanks so much.

HELPFUL INFO

I thought your video was very interesting. I work in a small greenhouse so I am always looking for info. I didn't know how to prune the petunias, I was like everyone else , pruning the flower.

That was great!
by: Elaine

I'm glad you mentioned petunias now I know what I've been doing wrong, my petunias do look bad by mid summer. Thank you for that video.

Good Stuff
by: Fate

Even when you know what you are supposed to do, it is good to get a reminder on technique. Thank you

Great Info!!!
by: Pat

That was so straightforward, I understood all that you said and illustrated. Thanks so much.

Info on container pruning presented very well. Short, with excellent information.

Great suff!
by: Dorothy

Well, I'm no beginner but that advice was invaluable! I prune faithfully, but usually cut way down the stem and just put up with no flowering for a while until they came into bloom again. Now I know what to do.

Thanks, Doug.

by: Joan from Michigan

Wonderful video. Now we know! Start the pruning early, before the plant looks bad. Great info about how to prune the petunia too. I've been doing it wrong all this time. Thanks Doug, you do a great job.

Really good, Doug. I would guess most of us have been doing this wrong for years and years. Thanks. Love that the time left of the video is there now.

Great video. I was just picking the dead flowers off. No wonder my wave petunias looked so ugly and bare.

HELPFUL
by: Marilyn

by: Barbara C.

Great video Doug ! I half knew most of what you talked about, but it was sure nice to have a refresher on what I knew and to learn something new also.
You are doing a great job and I always look forward to your next bits of wisdom!

pruning containers
by: Ellen from Grand Haven,MI

What a great video. I'm was doing just what many others do and just pick the dead flower off. No wonder my wave petunias looked so ugly and bare. This was a great tip, just too bad that I have had my petunias too long to prune them right. We've had so much rain that they're beaten down an most likely waterlogged. So bad, so sad. But I'm on the way to the nursery to get more plants to finish off my beds, so I'll see if there is any on sale now.

Container Pruning

Great video! I'm going out right now to find those growing tips on the petunias.

thanks that really helps

Don't Pinch Out Buds
by: Doug

Whoa! You don't have to pinch out buds! Even impatiens have growing tips - they're simply smaller. I don't normally jump in here but avoiding pinching out the flower buds is half the battle.

Practical Advice
by: Candi

I'm certainly guilty of not wanting to prune a perfectly healthy plant that's full of blooms. The video gave clear and practical advice for the procrastinators (like me) who tend to let containers get out of hand and can't figure out what went wrong. Then I have to cut the growth back too far and they are unsightly (as you pointed out). Your sketches were excellent. Now I have a handle on what to prune and when!

Unbelievable...
by: Mary

I just can't believe how easy your explanations make it for us gardeners. I have never know how to prune a container and have gotten very frustrated watching my plants look worse instead of better. Thank you so much.

WELL????
by: Anonymous

I went right out and did exactly as you said to all my impatiens in pots but it hurt. I was pinching off dozens and dozens of buds. But I have faith!

Oooh Boy!!
by: Debbie SmithAnonymous

That was terrific,I believe that is the best advice I've heard in many, many moons thats easy and people that don't check out your site are really missing out on the best, best tips,Great!!!Thank-you,waiting for the next video!

Wow!
by: Joy

I had no idea it was so simple! Thanks Doug!

Tip Pruning--Great Tip!
by: JennyB

You hit on a very simple but important practice. This is something I knew, but have grown lax about doing. It is always good to have refresher courses for those reminders. Thanks Doug!

Pruning Container Gardens
by: Sandy

Tip pruning, huh? Who knew? I deadhead faithfully but that only removes spent blooms not the growing tip. My window boxes are going to be the envy of the neighborhood this summer.
Thanks Doug.
