A Short Video On Pruning Tomatoes
Here's how I prune and train tomatoes in my garden so I can see the fruit sets and harvest easily. I also get way more fruit from training up a string than if I let them flop over the ground.
This drastic pruning is the result of a garden that got away from us when we took some time off. Sigh - gardens will do that to you. :-) So this training should be done on an ongoing basis, the suckers removed as they develop and not all at once like this.
Some of you may also have concerns about letting in disease when you remove branches. There's a ton of myths out there about this kind of thing and the bottom line is that unless you're a really, really heavy smoker and blowing smoke and nicotine juice on your healthy plants, you're going to be just fine pruning and removing suckers from tomatoes. A plant like this that's well treated with tons of water and feed, is going to outgrow darn near anything that comes along.
In any case, this garden video will give you the way to do it. And you'll be able to see how I simply twine them up a string with no tying or other supports. The weight of the plant provides enough friction to hold it in place (a greenhouse tomato trick from yee olde days) :-)
