Garden Pruning How-To's

This page is intended to both demonstrate the lovely art of pruning plants and to show you that it's not an arcane science.

The first thing


Plants are pretty resilient. It's harder than you think to really screw them up so a mistake or two here and there isn't the end of the world and it likely won't kill your plant.

The Second Thing


Watch the video! Yeah, really. There are only two cuts to learn and once you've learned these you'll know 90% of what you need to know to understand this gardening skill.

The Third Thing


The vast majority of plants are best worked on when they are dormant. There are a few exceptions to this but those will be explained in the articles.
