When it comes to a cold late spring, the rule of thumb is to relax. There are going to be plants that are later than normal and maybe even plants that are going to die.

Several points to consider - there’s nothing you can do about any of it so what’s going to happen is going to happen. Relax

The second thing for the very impatient or curious is to go to the garden and gently pull some of the mulch or dirt away from the crown of the plant in question. If the crown is hard and firm - you’re good (or rather it is) If the crown is soft and mushy, it’s compost.

But the key here is that plants decide on their own when it’s time to come up and survive.

And finally, if it doesn’t come up this year - it ain’t comin’ up next year either. ;-)

Nailed it!

You are so right Doug! Gave myself anxious moments looking for my hostas and other plants I had started. They come along eventually, or they don't. Go to "plan B" and relax. Gardening should be pleasurable, and not cause us stress.

If you can, take advantage of family's and friends' perenniel divisions to cut cost. Not everyone is able to purchase all the lovely nursery products. Save for the more expensive tree or shrub that you really, really want.

Everyone should be able to follow their passtime, hobby, passion at some level. And relax, it's why we do it afterall!

But alas, I'll still always be out in spring looking for the first tender shoots of the survivors.
