What Online Gardening Courses Should We Do?

by Doug
(Somewhere Out in Lake Ontario)

I've responded to the newsletter list in an email about their feedback to the first video on how we're going to organize things.

I note that you're free to participate and watch the video without having to sign up for the updates and course membership but if you're looking to receive course material (handouts etc) then I'll only be sending those and the free ebooks out to course/seminar members.

This session is to identify the specific courses we want to organize and learn about.

By the way, if you'd like to join our merry band of gardening seminar takers, then enter your name/email by clicking back to the main page. As always, I don't spam, rent or sell your address and you can unsubscribe at any time as there's a link in every issue.

Please add your question below right now (click the add comment link) to identify the main topic headings you'd like to see covered in a series of videos and handouts.

Online Gardening Course Topics
by: Jan C

Pretty much everything I would have suggested has been covered in someones comment.
I would like to see more on irrigation systems both for pots and planting bed irrigation. Drip vs spray, adaptation to inground irrigation system as landscape matures, etc.
Maybe something on ergonomic gardening for older people, tricks for digging easier, moving pots easier, basically smart planning for garden design to allow for older people to get exercise in caring for their garden but not be overwhelmed by the amount of harder stuff. Tree pruning from young sapling tree through the years to mature tree so that the tree develops a good branch structure.
I liked the low maintenance and small greenhouse sugestoins too.
Thanks so much for all your hard work, I learn a lot from reading your information.

Tell me more about...
by: Britt

I am interested in just about anything having to do with gardening but somewhere along the line I would like to see courses on how to choose and set up a greenhouse, any secrets that produce amazing vegetables, creating your own pond area and natural ways to keep animals out of flower and veggie gardens. I am so excited to learn about all these different things. Thank you for your time.

What Online gardening courses should we do?
by: Kathy M

I could use more education in dividing plants, there's so many different rules, and some people tell me you can divide a hosta in spring? I thought it was fall?

Is it true you can just put the seed of the plant your dead-heading, into the ground, and get another plant that way?

Just ways to get more plants, would be appreciated for me, and the proper way to do it, special knife, or rip with your hands?

Tools to use and time of year to cut back shrubs so they don't take over the beds. Thanks, i am enjoying your site.
Appreciate all of your hard work. Maybe try recording your videos out of doors and instead of a white board, actually planting up a container, trimming a shrub etc.

Balcony Gardens
by: San Antonio

I have the most beautiful view from my balcony and have begun to add flower boxes, palms, potted plants and flowers, but I am having difficulty with keeping them watered and the hot season hasn't even begun yet. At this time they are getting morning sun but I will be moving to where they will get mid-day sun (the heat of our day is at 3-7pm).

I think I'm not using the right soil, fertiizer, or maybe they need bigger pots? Please help me before my Paradise dies.

Thank you,

Lori

You have so many, but....
by: June

More on propagation. When, how, especially how to grow-on starts. Emphasis on economics. We see so many gardens in Mags and on TV, but I suspect most are pretty expensive. I believe many are done by professionals. It might be nice to have money, but most of us don't. We have only our backs and our brains. Well, will and desire also, but you get what I'm after. How about these? Greenhouse, (small and affordable for average people), hot frame, (using compost for heat), cold frames, clotches (spelling?). Methods of growing veggies out of season.
Is there anyway to grow cool season lettuce in the heat of the summer?

Gardening Courses
by: jennyb

I think Composting and Mulch 101 would be a good place to start. There are so many new gardeners that are not sure how to start and what to do. I think composting and mulch are the basis of successful gardening and really make thing so much easier.

plant propagation systems
by: Cheryl Webster

How about some sort of simple construction of a propagation system, using an electric run mist spray system. For the people who are just a little above bare basic beginners?

Pruning, composting leaves
by: Karen

Pruning fruit (apple) trees so they look nice in the yard as well as produce. Mine is about 5 years old.

Compost. Particularly our abundance of large leaves. We don't have much grass so just have a push mower. Don't have a lot of space either.

Course Ideas
by: Liv

Hi Doug,

As a newbie, I have so much to learn and agree with a lot of the ideas already posted. Here are my favorites:

-Pruning/deadheading perennials and vegetables (demonstrating the "when" and "how")
-Container gardening (flower or veggie ideas, maintenance, and watering)
-Shade gardening (special needs, considerations, interplantings/groupings, color)
-Organic growing
-Rose companions (to hide "knees," combining with clematis)
-Small space gardening (including square foot planting?)

Thanks again for all you do!

Take care,
Liv

the eary way to raise garden bed
by: sarah

i am looking for the easy way to raise a small garden bed.

"low-maintenance" gardening
by: Diane in PA

If there is such a thing! My gardening to do list is killing me and taking all my free time. Tips and tools to save time would be great! Also garden time management--I always seem to be several weeks behind in tasks. Thanks for your wonderful gardening site/blog/newsletters!

Garden Lime
by: Grammie

I always learned that a little lime made for the sweetest veggies. Do you add lime to your compost? Do you add lime to your potting mixture of peat and compost or rotted manure?

Japanese Beetles
by: Cyndi

Have been over whelmed with the amount of Japanese beetles that attack my garden (especially raspberries). But do not want to apply anything toxic to the plants (will be eating the fruit). Need some ideas !!!
Also, am interested in learning what shade tolerant plants can be grown underneath pine trees.

Container gardening
by: Jean

Hi Doug,
I love gardening but living in a flat now, I use containers. So, that's what I'd like to hear about - growing herbs, tomatoes, small flowering plants in containers and in a year round hot area.

Container Plantings
by: Laura

I would like information on unusual container plantings. I like to mix tropicals, annuals, perennials, grasses, etc. What are good combinations that are successful?

Watering System
by: Shirley

We have recently had a watering system installed to ease our angst when we cannot be home to water every week. Much to my surprise the company recommends 2 to 3 times a week and 20 to 30 minutes in each zone. My old brain doesn't reconcile this advice with the "water deeply and less often to encourage deep root growth" advice of old. What is your advice? Would it be different for lawn and beds? veggie garden? Help?

I am a beginner
by: Carmen

Being a beginner gardener I am interested in any topic. Thank you

Pruning
by: Nancy ( Mississauga)

I would really like to learn when to prune annuals, perennials, small trees and shrubs. I read somewhere that you prune for shape in fall and in spring/summer for flower with some exceptions as in Lilacs. Thank you for sharing your gardening knowledge.

Ken
by: Ken

My compost pile is about 99% leaves (brown) and 1% greens. Since I mulch my grass I do not have much green for nitrogen. Will I still have a good quality compost and if not what shall I do?

tree moving
by: beth norton

we want to know how to go about moving a very small tree that has rooted in our greenhouse. It is a weeping cherry with about a 2" caliper and approx 4' high. My greenhouse is only 10' tall so we need to move it and would like to keep it growing.

Garden Design / Edging
by: Sarah

We would like to know how to go about designing our dream gardens without being overwhelmed, especially about different edging choices and which ones are best in which situations.
