retribution
by: maude

If this is indeed Star of Bethlehem, I have a story. Years ago my mother-in-law showed me a flower she called "Star of Bethlehem" which were all over her flower beds and her lawn. Years before while visiting a public park she became so enamoured with these little flowers that , right under a sign "Please do not take flowers" she pulled one up, hid it in her luggage and took it home. The next spring a dozen came up and soon there were hundreds and then thousands growing everywhere on her property. When she was last able to care for her garden - at 93 - she said they were the bane of her existence; no matter how hard she tried she could not get rid of these invasive little critters which she had renamed, in acknowledgment of her sin, "Crime and Punishment". I don't recall what they looked like but recall they were very beautiful. I believe they grew form tubers. If this is not that flower I hope you will show a picture of the real Star of Bethlehem. Love your site, Doug. Thanks.

Very pretty

I have a lot of these scattered through my yard also. They are small and sweet . Perfect little Spring gem. Haven't been able to identify, but maybe someone here knows more about them.

Extremely Invasive
by: Anonymous

These plants are extremely invasive and they are also apparently poisonous to people and animals. The invasive aspect explains why they are dotting your yard...I have the same problem and they are impossible to get rid of once they are established. They're pretty, but unless you like them extremely well, I'd dig them out or at the least put a barrier around them.

Thanks for the comment.
Since posting this picture, now believe they are actually O. umbellatum, aka "Star of Bethlehem"
Yet the mystery still remains as to why they are dotting my yard.

I believe your flower is a Blood Root Does it get very big leaves after the flower goes then a 1-2" seed pod ?
